Silent Witnesses | A silent film by Ewgenij Bauer | RU 1914

A maid who is being courted by the son of the house discovers that his fiancée has a lover. When the son refuses to jeopardize his wedding, the maid, out of affection for him, tries to drive away the fiancée’s lover. Offered hush money, she refuses to accept it, even though it means she will remain a maid.

Bauer, a psychiatrist, proves to be a master of psychological suggestion and manipulation, capturing intimate human emotions with subtle gestures that pierce the hearts of the film’s audience. The film powerfully conveys his warmth and empathy for his characters while offering a vivid portrayal of social conditions.

With a recording of Benny Omerzell (piano/synth) and Alexander Yannilos (drums) from the REAKTOR cinema on 22 December 2018, in cooperation with Bösendorfer.
