Reaktor

Every corner of REAKTOR tells a story, creating an immersive environment that honors the building’s eventful history while embracing contemporary artistic expression.

Built in the 19th century as the Grand Etablissement Gschwandner, the late classicist complex served a century later as a radio assembly site and a prop rental store before undergoing its most recent transformation. From 2016 to 2018, author, designer, and filmmaker Bernhard Kammel renovated the building, carefully preserving its ruin-like charm while seamlessly integrating cutting-edge technical infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art movie theater.

The result is more than just a space: REAKTOR is a venue where the wounds and traces of the past have become the foundation for the survival of the new. Visitors can work in historical spaces that have transcended their time, and experience how the timeless, fleeting present takes on new depth in its reimagined rooms. With a radically authentic aesthetic, meticulously incorporating illusionary techniques and aging effects, REAKTOR is now a vibrant home for art, literature, science, and music. Its three halls, built across different architectural periods and offering 1,200 m² of space, provide exceptional flexibility for showcasing contemporary works across genres, forms, and scales, uncensored with full artistic freedom and autonomy. To maintain its independence, REAKTOR also selectively rents its space for curated commercial purposes.
