The Girl From The Street | A silent film by Evgeniy Bauer | RU 1914

Bauer’s drama tells the story of a man’s downfall after he seeks a poor woman from the streets as the love of his life, hoping to escape the supposed superficiality of his wealthy social class. Yet, scarred by poverty, she develops a cold, soulless craving for luxury and distraction. Like a black hole, her desire consumes and destroys everything it attracts. Bauer proves to be a master of psychological suggestion and manipulation, capturing intimate human emotions with subtle gestures that pierce the hearts of the film’s audience. The film powerfully conveys his warmth and empathy for his characters while offering a vivid portrayal of social conditions.

With a recording of Benny Omerzell (piano/synth) and Alexander Yannilos (drums) from the REAKTOR cinema on 22 December 2018.
