A Late Summer’s Night

AT 2011 | 73 min. | Russian | 35mm | color | 1:1.85

Cast off from any civilization a group of lovers is awaiting the end of the world.

A barbecue is taking place in front of a mountain hut. The host, a bus driver, is celebrating his retirement. He has invited four women he used to flirt with while driving his routes. One of the women, a single mother, has left her eleven-year-old daughter alone for the weekend. The girl, terribly disappointed, casts a spell, wishing that her mother would die and the world collapse. As the small gathering continues, combat jets suddenly fly unusually low overhead, and a large helicopter attempts to land on the forest road in front of the hut. An unexpected thunderstorm, followed by tremors in the earth, alarms the festive group, shattering their relaxed, flirtatious atmosphere. Cut off from civilization, the group begins to grapple with what they believe might be their last evening, searching for meaning in the face of impending disaster.
