BERNHARD KAMMEL was born in the fall of 1962, in Vienna
Author, designer, photographer, filmmaker, producer, forester, wildlife ecologist, horse-breeder.
University studies: 1980–1995 | architecture, theology, and forestry
In the late 70s, while still in high school, Kammel began crafting stories, poems, and dramatic fragments, publishing short fiction and reports in newspapers and cultural journals. Around the same time, he explored black-and-white still photography through essay projects. After graduating from Sacré Coeur in 1980—where he earned the nicknames “the Horse” and “the Philosopher”—he oscillated between career paths as a racing cyclist, photographer, psychologist, and architect, all to keep his writing free from the pressures of making a living. During the 1990s, he worked at several well-known architectural firms, including Franz E. Kneissl. By 1999, he transitioned into color portraiture and large-format narrative photographic canvases. In 2005, he founded his own film production company, allowing him to realize his vision entirely: he produces his films, writes original screenplays, casts every role, designs the visual framework (sets, camera, and editing), and directs, while operating the camera himself.
