NAURUTICA
Synthetic Film Future Islands and the Tragedy of Outer Space
04.11. - 05.11.2017
A film is being shot. A synthesizer hums. A table is set and a space ship has landed. We start out on an island. We end in space. Somewhere in-between, capitalism goes underwater on its way to Mars. Welcome to the Future Past!
Jacques Rancière once said, maybe, it is more important to save fiction from reality, than to protect reality from fiction.“ In this spirit, the episode follows the glow of the strangest of all elements, Phosphorus, from its extraterrestrial origins via alchemistic experiments, bird excrements, pacific islands, colonial expansions and dietary geopolitics to the new subaquatic and, once again, outer space territories of capitalism. In collaboration between various artists, theoreticians, a designer and a space station architect, the installation and performance measures the distance between islands and planets, tragedy and transgression, future, fiction and past. A gigantic table spans time and space; there is food to incorporate the stories and histories, and a space station that is a film set. In the words of Jean-François Lyotard, „myth can only be told in the language of the myth.“
